The Hilo High School Special Olympics student athletes, in collaboration with the HHS Leo Club, recently participated in a community service project. The students held a practice emergency earthquake drill at the Hale Anuenue care center.
The youths volunteered to act as residents and go through safety procedures just as they would in a real emergency situation. This allowed the center to identify and prepare for safety and transportation needs in the case of an actual emergency.
The joint effort between the Special Olympic athletes and the Leo Club is an ongoing school effort to promote Hilo High School’s Special Olympics Project Unify Program. Project Unify is an educational based project using sports and educational programs to promote inclusion, respect and awareness for students both with and without intellectual disabilities.
Hilo High School Project Unify Program engages student involvement through unified sports, inclusionary clubs, unity campaigns and assemblies.
